“I wouldn’t be involved in this work if I didn’t believe in it. The data is compelling.”—Dr. Robert G. Darling, Medical Director, Get Thin, MD
Dr. Darling is a practicing physician with more than 40 years of clinical experience. He developed his background in emergency medicine, where rapid, high-pressure decision-making is a crucial part of the job.
Formerly serving in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, he was competitively selected to serve in the White House Medical Unit and was the first board-certified emergency medicine physician in the role.
During his time with the White House, he provided primary and protective medical support services to President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, their immediate families, and Senior White House officials.
Dr. Darling brings the same diligence to his practice today: “Whether you’re treating a head of state or someone in a neighborhood clinic, the mission is the same—you treat the patient, and you don’t cut corners.”
Throughout his career, Dr. Darling has delivered emergency and preventative medical care in 55 countries, including regions with very limited infrastructure. He practiced medicine aboard Air Force One, Marine One, and other official aircraft. He worked alongside the U.S. Secret Service on medical preparedness for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRNE) threats.
Dr. Darling has been entrusted with some of the greatest medical tasks in the United States and around the globe, and he brings that same knowledge and dedication to his work at Get Thin MD.
After Dr. Darling’s experience in government services, he transitioned to executive medicine, offering care to high-performing professionals and individuals with the most demanding lifestyles.
He has helped his patients by focusing on maintaining physical, cognitive, and metabolic performance, and he currently serves as Senior Medical Director of a concierge healthcare practice.
Dr. Darling is known for building long-term patient trust and continuity of care, whether he’s working with high-profile patients or in telehealth services.
“
There’s a concept called VIP syndrome, where people take shortcuts in care because someone is important. That’s how mistakes happen.” Dr. Darling makes it his personal mission to treat all patients with equality and dedication, regardless of who they are.
So, what brought Dr. Darling to Get Thin MD? After some initial skepticism about weight-loss medications several years ago, he has watched them grow. Ever reliant on evidence, his perspective shifted after seeing measurable results from clinical studies.
Dr. Darling says, “Two or three years ago, I might have been skeptical of some weight loss medicines. But the research has changed the conversation.”
Today, Dr. Darling recognizes GLP-1 medications are a major development in preventative medicine and a step toward the future. There are documented links between medically supervised weight loss and a decreased risk of heart attack and other serious weight-related health conditions.
At Get Thin, we see GLP-1 therapies as tools, not cosmetic solutions. With careful, prescribed use, patients can see improved long-term health outcomes. These outcomes go beyond helping patients “look” their best and actually help patients “feel” their best as well.
Dr. Darling encourages a careful approach to losing weight: “Medication supports the weight loss process—it doesn’t replace a healthy lifestyle.”
With this same philosophy, he emphasizes how GLP-1 medication works best when paired with sufficient protein intake, steady resistance training, and preservation of lean muscle mass. Appetite regulation is the primary driver of treatment success, but long-term lifestyle changes are just as crucial to a positive outcome.
In this same light, Dr. Darling encourages the use of body composition monitoring rather than just scale weight to ensure patients are on an optimal track. When it comes to GLP-1 use, Dr. Darling emphasizes the need for careful, gradual dosing and ongoing medical communication with a professional. A steady approach is safer and sustainable in the long run.
Dr. Darling says, “Virtual care isn’t a shortcut. It’s a tool.” He has longstanding experience delivering care remotely to his established patients and has seen firsthand how virtual care can improve accessibility. It’s an evolution of access, not a reduction in standards, especially when done in a medically sound, physician-supported way.
With every virtual consultation, Dr. Darling emphasizes a complete medical history review, with appropriate screening for underlying conditions and clear doctor-patient communication. When needed, he is happy to refer patients to primary care providers to support the best treatment outcomes.
Dr. Darling is transparent about the evolving nature of long-term GLP-1 research; he focuses on sustainable health improvements rather than short-term results. “We may not yet know every long-term effect. But what we do know is that sustained lifestyle change is a critical factor.”
Because of Dr. Darling’s integrity and careful approach, he supports integrated healthcare models like Get Thin. Models should include medical supervision, nutritional guidance, coaching, and accountability (the same model Get Thin MD uses for all patients).
If you’re ready to take the next solid steps in your weight loss journey today, trust Dr. Darling’s oversight of Get Thin MD.
